I want game knowledge, not mechanics tips Which resources are used to get which units and buildings, which buildings are useful for what kinds of strategies, what the differences are between all the different classes, etc. What i dont know is the game specific stuff. Typically it will range between 14 and 17 villager population when you push the button, with a few trick strats to skip an early house and age up with 10. Also, I'd advise maybe not doing Ottoman, the auto-villager thing creates bad habits. Which civs do you like? While you're getting used to the game's mechanics, I recommend just picking one and getting good with it before you branch out. It's going to depend on your civ and the strat you're doing.

The Strategy Wall has lots of civ specific advice, as well as general advice, and Interjection's tips and tricks are very good for learning some of the more helpful micromanagement techniques which can help optimize your play.

If you want more detail, start here, and here. If you do those seven things consistently and well, you'll beat a lot of players, and probably your friends. Mills and Plantations are expensive and slow.ħ) Learn the unit counters so that you can trade efficiently with your opponent's army, and avoid fights you will come off the worse in. Unspent resources are worth the same amount as uncollected resources.Ĥ) Age up to Colonial as quickly as possible.ĥ) Keep your explorer busy collecting treasures and scouting the map and enemy.Ħ) Use your army to control the map so you can exploit the more efficient resources of gold mines and huntables. The fundamentals are really quite simple.ġ) Keep your TC constantly producing villagers.Ģ) Keep your villagers constantly at work either gathering resources or constructing buildings.ģ) Spend your resources.

I understand the basics of rts strategy in terms of building workers and spending resources and keybinds and control groups. I can obviously play the game and learn most of this stuff over time but this game isn't particularly compelling or fun to play when you have no idea what you're supposed to be doing.Įdit: people seem to be missunderstanding what i'm asking for. I have a basic understanding of general RTS mechanics/concepts from the small amount of starcraft I used to play but I have no idea how anything in this game works beyond "make workers and guys who shoot their stuff"Īre there any good guides out there for the fundamentals? Stuff like how the resources work, when and why to focus on certain resources/buildings/units/objectives, what the different units do, and some really simple build order stuff just to get me started and help me to understand the strategy of the game? I just finished the in game tutorial and it more or less useless in terms of teaching me anything beyond the basic controls and all the guides I've found were also either not actual guides or assumed too much game knowledge. This subs wiki is guilty of this as well, but at least they say so upfront.

Every aoe guide I've been able to find either assumes you already know how to play the game (which isn't very helpful for a beginners guide), or just has a guy narrating his gameplay without really explaining the what and why of everything they're doing. I'm trying to learn how to play (more than just the controls) so that I can actually play with my friends instead of sitting on my thumb for 5 minutes and then getting rushed down or sending in my whole army to die to like 3 of their guys. Just bought AOE3 in the steam sale on my friends' requests.
